The purpose of this study was to optimize an analytical method for the detection of tetracycline antibiotics and their metabolites in water and to determine their fate and movement in streams. To analyze three tetracycline antibiotics and eight of their metabolites, water quality samples were taken from nine sites, which were scattered across upstream areas, into which livestock manure was directly released from nearby livestock operations, to downstream areas, between November 2010 and October 2011. These samples were pretreated with hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB; 200 mg, 6 cc) cartridges and analyzed using liquid chromatography/ tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Consequently, the limit of detection of the analysis method for the tetracycline antibiotics and their metabolites ranged from 3.7 to 18.2 ng/L. The recovery rates were 81-122%, and the relative standard deviation was less than 16%. In addition, the concentration of tetracycline antibiotics and their metabolites decreased or they were undetected when sampled from the upstream to downstream sites. Although the levels of tetracycline antibiotics and their metabolites detected were lower than their EC50, it is necessary to continue monitoring these substances in the environment.

We report the tropospheric transmissions at 22 GHz and 110 GHz by analyzing spectra measured by different ground-based microwave radiometers at Seoul. The transmittance is calculated from the opacities, which are the sum of absorption coefficients of the atmosphere. The opacities are derived from the tipping curve calibration for 22 GHz and the radiative transfer equation, from estimated tropospheric temperature for 110 GHz. The transmittance at these frequencies shows strong seasonal variation as it depends on the water vapor content of the troposphere. Although their variation scales differ, both transmittances show a linear relationship. In addition, the transmittances are derived from the 110 GHz ozone spectrum using quadratic equations.

Anthropogenic emission of lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) were assessed at tow power plants fueled by bitu-minous coal, and at one power plant fueled by mixes (bituminous and anthracite) coal. Plant input and output materials were sampled in each process. The input materials were the coal and B-C oil as fuel in the combustor, and limestone as the remover of SOx in air-pollutant control device. The output materials were bottom ash, fly ash, gesso and sludge. The materials were sampled at least three times at each sampling point, then analyzed using ICP or ICP/MS. The coal fuel was the main input source of Pb and Cd, and the concentration of Pb and Cd was higher in the mixed coal than in the bituminous coal. Total Pb and Cd emission in fly ash was highest among the output materials, and very low in off gas and sludge. However, the concentration of Pb and Cd in the sludge was highest among the output materials. The fly ash is sold for reuse, and the sludge is dumped in a landfill site. Therefore, Pb and Cd in the fly ash and in the sludge should be managed before they are passed on in these ways.

Micropollutants including pharmaceuticals, personal care products, pesticides, etc., and their transformation products (TP) are widely distributed in environmental media. However, limited information on their occurrence and concentration is available, at least partially due to lack of precise, reliable analytical tools. Recently, highly advanced instrument such as high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) has been commercially available and applicable for the detection of micropollutants and TPs. In addition, HRMS relevant screening techniques, suspect and nontarget screening, have been developed and optimized to identify unpredictable and unknown pollutants at trace levels. In this review paper, prior micropollutants and their TPs are suggested via literature survey, and the procedure of target/suspect/nontarget screening for their identification are introduced in detail with technical steps. Finally, the applicability of HRMS-based identification methods is discussed with lessons from previous studies. Considering the accuracy and applicability, suspect/nontarget screening approaches with HRMS are expected to extend our knowledge on micropollutants and TPs under the cover.

Fluorinated greenhouse gases have a significant impact on the environment. We propose a new analytical method for the quantitation of fluorinated gases in low concentration, such as perfluorocarbons, NF3, and SF6, in air samples. This method uses a cryogenic trapping-thermal desorption system, utilizing a gas chromatography/ mass spectrometry (GC/MS) system in combination with a cryogenic trapping system operated at temperatures from -30 to 300°C. The linearity, precision, method detection limits (MDLs), and limits of quantification (LOQs) of this system were verified using the chromatogram peak areas of the fluorinated greenhouse gases in the samples. The MDLs and LOQs for the gases tested were less than 1 nmol/mol and 3.1 nmol/mol, respectively. In addition, the precision of the analysis was less than 2%. Our results indicate that the proposed method is able to quantitatively analyze low concentrations of fluorinated greenhouse gases.

The reduction of organic loading in waste water is the one of the chief purposes of waste water treatment processes. In this study, we measured the movement of organic matter continuously during the treatment process and monitored its concentration by using online TOC analyzer. Using this method, we attempted to evaluate the effectiveness organic matter management using with a online TOC analyzer. We also attempted to develop waste water treatment monitoring technology. Wastewater treatment plants that processed waste from basic petrochemical compound manufacturing facilities using chemical and biological treatments, that resulted in acidic or alkaline waste waters were investigated. Two kinds of inlet waters and one kind of mixing water were studied to monitor the movement of organic matter. Waste water influx and settling tank, aeration tank, and filter were used to monitor three kinds of water remotely. Laboratory and online measurement results were compared periodically to verify the reliability of the test results. After real-time monitoring, the movement of organic materials in inlet water and the impact of organic matter on loading changes were verified during the waste water treatment process. This monitoring was carried out twice over six weeks. The first attempt focused on quality control and adjustment of the measurement conditions and the second one focused on the actual monitoring. Due to insufficient pH control due to the influx of unknown alkaline samples, abnormal results were estimated in the first attempt, and reliable results were only obtained in the second attempt. More than 10 times the expected amount of abnormal results were obtained ; these can be attributed to high wastewater tank cleaning and process work. In conclusion, we were able to determine the effectiveness of real-time monitoring of organic matter movement in waste water treatment plants and suggest improvements for long term monitoring and automatic treatment of waste water.
